What is ADAS?
ADAS are technological features designed to increase the safety of driving a vehicle. It spells out Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. It is for example camera or radar based systems like lane assist, automatic brakes, adaptive cruise control and much more.
Whenever these systems or sensors are damaged, moved or disrupted in any way, they need to be calibrated. Every manufacturer has different requirements and repair processes for this. But they all require a proper calibration to ensure that the driver assistance features will function correctly and safely even after the disruption.
As a workshop you need to make sure that you can perform safe calibration on the vehicles you repair. No matter if it is passenger cars, light or heavy commercial vehicles such as trucks and buses.

Two types of calibration
There are two basic types of calibration you can perform on a vehicle: static or dynamic.
The make and model of the vehicle decide what kind of calibration you should use.
Static calibration
Static calibration is when the vehicle needs to be calibrated in a workshop, using special equipment.
It can for exampel be a special rig with targets, wheel clamps and radar measurement gear that is set up to the vechicle according to OEM instructions. You will need a diagnostic tool as well.
Dynamic calibration
With dynamic calibration you put the vehicle’s ADAS system in calibration mode with a diagnostic tool and then take the vehicle on a drive. The OEM has often specific demands of how to perform this.
For example the road might need to be straight and of a certain distance in order for the calibration to be correctly done.
When is calibration necessary?
There are several occasions when you actually need to make a calibration.
Some of them are:
- When the windscreen has been removed and installed or replaced.
- After a vehicle repair of a traffic accident.
- After the vehicle’s wheel alignment has been adjusted.
- After adjustment of the driving height.
- If an ADAS related control unit has been replaced.
- When the camera for driver assistance systems has been re-installed, repaired or replaced.
Why is calibration of ADAS important?
Vehicle accidents are almost always caused due to driver mistakes. ADAS are there to minimize accidents. It is therefore crucial to have ADAS systems that work exactly as they are supposed to work. For example: you do not want to have a malfunctioning automatic brake assist or a lane assist that are not working as it should.
If the vehicle is not calibrated in the right way and according to OEM standards, the vehicle could cause accidents. And crashes can be dangerous. Even lethal. So make sure to always follow OEM instructions and to use ADAS equipment that is professional and safe.
